Attitudes toward smacking in a New Zealand probability sample: Psychological and demographic correlates

چکیده

P right to use physical force (e.g., smacking) as a child discipline strategy is a highly contentious issue around the world, particularly when legislative bans of the physical discipline of children are on a country’s political agenda. This has been the case in New Zealand over the past two decades, as increasing national and international pressure have been placed on the government to implement strategies aimed at reducing violence against children (Wood, Hassall, Hook, & Ludbrook, 2008). In 2007, this pressure culminated in the repeal of section 59 of the Crimes Act 1961, which had provided a statutory defence for adults prosecuted for assaulting a child if the assault was for the purpose of parental discipline.
